Legal notice and copyright

Two things live on this page: who answers for the site, and who owns what is on it. The second half also covers the one copyright question that matters in a piano studio every single week — sheet music.

Who is responsible for this site

Justin Abraham Paul, teaching on his own account as Abraham Piano Studio, 462 Bay Ridge Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11220, United States. Contact: contact@estudioabrahampiano.com.

The site is hosted by Hostinger. The terms of the teaching itself are in the terms and conditions.

The texts

Everything written here — the pages and the six articles — is original and belongs to Justin Abraham Paul. All rights reserved.

What you may do without asking: quote a paragraph, with a link back. That is normal and welcome. What you may not do: republish a whole article, on your site or anywhere else, with or without credit, and with or without a rewrite by a machine.

The figures in the articles come from outside sources, cited one by one at the end of each one. Those sources belong to whoever published them and their own terms apply.

The photographs and the videos

The videos are recordings of Justin playing, and they are his. So is the photograph of him beside the open piano.

And here is a distinction most sites do not make: several of the images on this site were produced with an image generator. In the United States, an image generated by a machine without human authorship carries no copyright of its own, so none is claimed over them. They are not presented as photographs of a real moment either; the ones that are real are stated to be so in the project record.

Sheet music: bought, never photocopied

This is the copyright rule that comes up every week in a piano studio, so it is written down as a rule and not left to chance.

  • Each student buys their own copy of the method book or the score they work from. It is not included in the price of the lesson, and the reason is not stinginess: photocopying a method book to hand it out is copyright infringement, and doing it as a teacher is doing it professionally.
  • Justin will tell you which edition to buy and roughly what it costs before you buy it, so nobody ends up with the wrong book.
  • For music in the public domain — Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and much of what a student plays in the first years — there are free, legal and good editions, and those are used whenever they fit. Careful: a modern edition of an old piece can have its own rights, even when the music does not.
  • Anything Justin writes for you himself — an exercise, an arrangement, a fingering — is his, and it is yours to use for your own study.

Recordings of a lesson

You may record your own lesson to study from it — it is one of the most useful things a student can do. Publishing it is a different matter: it needs Justin’s agreement, and if the piece is still under copyright it may need the rights holder’s too. That applies to a teacher publishing a student, and to a student publishing a teacher.

The brand and the site itself

The name Abraham Piano Studio, the logo and the design of these pages identify this studio and are not to be reused to present another service, nor to make a site that could be taken for this one.

Third-party names that appear on the site — Yamaha on the lid of a piano, the hosting provider, the map providers — belong to their owners and are mentioned only to describe what is there.

If you think something here is yours

Write to contact@estudioabrahampiano.com saying what it is, where it is on the site and what right you hold. It is reviewed and, if you are right, taken down first and discussed afterwards — that order and not the other.
